Guided Brainstorm

STEP 1: Explain the web format of this brainstorm

STEP 2: Have students draw a portrait of themselves in the middle.

STEP 3: Ask a series of questions. (Beneath are some examples)

  • What helps you write?
  • Write down all the types of writing you can think of.
  • How you would score yourself out of 10 as a writer?

This guided brainstorm provides students with the opportunity to view themselves as a writer. Acting  as a cross curricular with art, this activity will engage multiple areas of student interest. This web requires the student to consider an individualistic side to the writing process. This can be used as an assessment activity for the beginning of the year. Students can reflect the way they feel about writing. The teacher can use  the results of this assessment tool to structure their intro into ELA.
